The Arkansas Forestry Commission has several programs for volunteer fire departments. These programs included purchase, loans, grants, and training classes. Click on the link above to get more information on these programs and training. AFC also has Forestry Plows stationed around the state for assisting in brush/woods/wildland fires. If you need a plow at a fire scene, contact Fire Dispatch to have a Plow (if available) dispatched to your location. |

Air Tankers Contract with Phoenix, AZ company. 2 tankers in state from August to September. 4 tankers in state from February to April. Single engine aircraft. Holds 600 gallons of water., usually 550 gallons on board. Can drop water, foam, or retardant. Retardant around $400 per load. Retardant bases usually in Hot Springs and one mobile. Can switch from water to foam in air. For foam, adds 1-1/2 gallons of foam to 550 gallons of water. Base of Operations Usually Hot Springs and move around state as needed. Runway needs to be 3000’ long and 50’ wide. Criteria for requesting air tankers Life safety and structure protection has priority. Prefer smaller fires. On larger fires, only supporting ground crews. Dispatch out of Malvern — 1-800-468-8834. All air drops stop around sunset. Anticipate lead time. Ranger need not be on scene to request air drop. Fire Departments need to be available to fill air tankers. No one forward of wings. Fill port on “driver’s” side of aircraft. Shut off valve with 1-1/2” connection. Pilot will signal when tank is full. |

Training Burns If your Fire Department is considering burning a house for training, there are certain conditions that must be met: You must obtain a permit from ADEQ. The structure must be certified “Asbestos Containing Material” free. NFPA 1403 (Checklist) must be followed. Obtain written statement from proper owner that the building is not insured. Insure that all utilities are disconnected from the structure. Insure that surrounding utilities cannot be damaged during the burn. Notify Pulaski County Dispatch, Pulaski County OEM, and ADEQ prior to burning.

OEM Response Pulaski County Emergency Management Response Criteria PCSO Dispatch will notify the on-duty Emergency Manager whenever there is a confirmed, working structure fire. The Emergency Manager will respond to the following structure fires: 1. When requested by the responding fire department. 2. If a business, industry, or large structure is involved. 3. If there are firefighter injuries or fatalities. 4. If there are civilian fatalities. 5. If there are hazardous chemicals involved in the structure. Pulaski County Emergency Management will also need to be notified and will respond on the following incidents: 1. Uncontrolled, large fuel spills. OEM should be notified of any Gasoline spills of 25 gallons or more, and any Diesel Fuel spills of 25 gallons or more. 2. HazMat incidents, to include meth labs. 3. Terrorism or bomb threats. 4. Natural disasters (tornadoes, floods, earthquakes, etc.) 5. Uncontrolled grass or woods fires with 2 or more fire departments on scene. 6. Search and rescue operations (urban or wilderness). 7. Unusual rescue situations (trench, confined space, building collapse, etc.). 8. Air cascade trailer needed for refilling air cylinders for fire departments or PCSO Dive Team. 9. Any other situation where Emergency Management is needed on scene.

Volunteer Firefighters Association of Pulaski County The association was formed “to promote effective and efficient firefighting and fire prevention techniques and other emergency services in Pulaski County Arkansas.” The Association meets quarterly. For meeting dates and times call 340-6911. The Association sponsors an annual “Fire College” for volunteer firefighters. The date of this years fire college is May 15, 2010 at the Little Rock Fire Training Facility. Lee Church is the President of the Association. |
